Two pinnacles of Romanticism usher in 2019: Beethoven’s captivating Violin Concerto, Op. 61, and Dvorak’s tuneful Symphony No. 6 in D Major. Beethoven’s masterpiece, which was at the time of its premiere considered both unsatisfying and unplayable, comes to life with the “fiery virtuosity” and “impeccable intonation” of Concert Artists Guild Competition Winner YooJin Jang as soloist. Dvorák’s charming and lyrical Sixth Symphony, featured in the second half of the concert, draws its inspiration both from the model of Beethoven and Brahms and from the folk music, dance rhythms, and national spirit of the composer’s beloved Czech homeland.

Melody runs rhapsodic with Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony, inspired by the 26-year-old composer’s visit to the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Staffa, and Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, based not only on the music of the great virtuoso violinist Niccolò Paganini but also on his extravagant personality. The award-winning young pianist Dominic Cheli, applauded for his “splendid playing, . . . great skill and technical prowess”, is the featured soloist in the Rachmaninoff.
